Brooklyn Flying Squads

Tuesday Flying Squad

When: Tuesdays, 9am – 2:45pm
Ages: 8-12 (please be in touch for other ages)
Meet: At Grand Army Plaza Main Branch Library
Dismissal: From Brooklyn Apple Academy, 545 5th Ave, Brooklyn, NY
Cost: $85/day (financial aid available, see details below)

Tuesday’s Squad focuses primarily on learning through playfulness. Looking at all of the ways that children experiment and test the world by playing, the young people involved learn a bit about themselves while exploring their city with a group of other young adolescents. Tuesdays may be most appropriate for children ages 8-12 or those young people internally focused on play and discovery.

Friday Flying Squad

Friday’s Squad looks towards the outside world and developing longer term projects concerning social justice and youth rights. This group will be using the power of play to examine the serious issues of how society impacts them and how they can impact society. Fridays may be most appropriate for children ages 12-16 or those young people externally focused on the world around them.

Brooklyn Pricing Information

The Brooklyn Flying Squads are run as a part of Brooklyn Apple Academy, a homeschooling coop. And so, enrollment is done through the Brooklyn Apple Academy registration. Tuition is priced at $85/day. Having said that, we strive to make our programs affordable and accessible to all interested. And so, please feel free to reach out to us if you need financial assistance, and we will do our best to work with you!

Drop-in days are also possible at a flat rate of $85/day, so long as we have the space available. Please feel free to contact us.

Portland Pricing Information

The Portland Flying Squads operate on a trust-based, pay-what-you-can funding model. Please pick the price that works for your finances and family. Keep in mind that in order to run our program, we do need to make a minimum amount. If you are unable to attend even at the sliding scale costs, please email us to talk and we will do our best to work out an option for you.

Sliding scale rate of $150-$250/month
Drop in day rate of $40-$65/day

We offer drop-in day opportunities for anyone looking to try the program out, or who cannot commit to a full month. However, our intention is to get closer and stronger as a community, and due to the nature of our group it is easier to grow as a community together if we have consistent attendance. Eugene Flying Squads

Flights will meet for discussion and community journaling at the public library. The group will utilize public transportation, biking and walking to explore the Eugene/ Springfield area.
Flights are split into 2 groups that are generalized by age, but more by attitude and interest.

Hummingbirds Squad (generally 8-12) focuses primarily on learning through playfulness. Looking at all of the ways that children experiment and test the world by playing, the young people involved learn a bit about themselves while exploring their city with a group of other young adolescents. Hummingbirds may be most appropriate for children ages 8-12 or those young people internally focused on play and discovery.

Austin Flying Squads are run as a part of Abrome, a Self-Directed Education community that is an alternative to conventional schooling and dominant culture. Austin Flying Squads operate on a trust-based, pay-what-you-can funding model. Please pick the price that works for your finances and family. Keep in mind that in order to run our program, we do need to make a minimum amount. If you are unable to attend even at the sliding scale costs, please email us to talk and we will do our best to work out an option for you.

Our intention is to get closer and stronger as a community, and due to the nature of our group it is easier to grow as a community together if we have consistent attendance. Therefore, we are asking Learners to commit to 4-week/session blocks. We offer one-time drop-in opportunities for anyone looking to try the program out.
